Interdisciplinary Interdisciplinary Approaches to Teacher Preparation

Dorothy Wallace
Dartmouth College
Math Across the Curriculum Project

The Mathematics Across the Curriculum Project at Dartmouth College was a six year effort resulting in a variety of materials designed to help faculty teach mathematics in the context of another discipline. In our materials, mathematics finds its natural place in art, music, literature, biology, physics, earth sciences, and chemistry. We feel that many of our materials could be adjusted or enhanced to suit preservice teacher education admirably. Some of our materials feature a multicultural approach. We would like to work with the CETP projects to modify a selection of materials to suit the needs of those who educate future teachers. We would also like to collaborate with other institutions in the testing of these materials, as Dartmouth has too few students preparing for certification to provide a suitable test population. We will provide each project with a selection of our materials to take home.
