Three challenges face teacher preparation programs: (1) Increasing the number of hours pre-service teachers spend in the field; (2) developing partnerships between university teacher education programs and the schools; and (3) increasing the opportunities for pre-service teachers to learn and teach subject matter content using standards-based approaches. UTEP's solution to these challenges is a field-based approach to teacher education.

Drawing on the work being done at The University of Texas at El Paso that is partially funded by NSF/CETP, the activity-oriented workshop will provide participants with information on "how-to" plan and implement field-base courses in mathematics and science. Key administrators and faculty involved in the courses will conduct the workshop. Participants will learn how to institutionalize the courses, establish university-school working relationships, and develop course structures and assignments for a field-based setting. Results from the evaluation/research study will be presented through the use of video clips and video analyses. Participants' experiences with and/or critical comments concerning field-based courses will be solicited during the workshop.

The workshop will cover the following topics:

What needed to be put in place (Administrative Partnering)
What we did (Field-Base Courses)
What we know about the implementation (Evaluation Outcomes)
What lessons did we learn and what concerns do we have (Lessons Learned)
