Math Using Technology to Enhance Mathematics Teaching and Learning

Serigne Gningue
Lehman College (NYCETP)

The purpose of this presentation is to show the different ways technology is integrated in our M.S. Ed. in Mathematics Education Grades 7-12 program. Beginning with the introductory methods course ESC532, concepts in linear algebra, probability, statistics, and geometry are explored using the TI-83 graphing calculator (and more recently the TI-83 plus), spreadsheets and other computer applications. Students in the program also explore different ways of using the Internet via a Listserv through which they can chat, communicate with an instructor and with each other, as well as post assignments, problem solutions, and discussions.

We will also present an outline of a pilot study which will seek to show that when teachers are exposed to different ways that calculators (scientific and graphing) and computers enhance the curriculum, then changes in attitude and beliefs, as well as students' performance take place. If successful, the goal is to design and develop a mathematics education course in which technology is used throughout to support and facilitate conceptual development, exploration, reasoning, and problem solving.
