Proposed International Conference: Feedback Wanted
posted by Rod on Tuesday May 30, @06:42PM
News Morton Sternheim has submitted the following request for comments:

STEMTEC, the Massachusetts CETP, is planning an international conference in 2002 as part of its dissemination effort. The tentative theme is "Improving science and math education on the K-16 continuum." The conference would include teacher preparation, but not in a way that would exclude faculty who do not consider themselves involved directly in teacher prep. (Enter the discussion forum for the complete article...)

We have proposed to NSF that we combine this conference with the 2002 CETP meeting. The annual CETP meeting would occur within the construct of the international conference. Gordon Uno says that NSF is interested in this idea and suggests that we invite feedback from the CETP participants via this web site.

Merging the two events and meeting in Washington has many advantages. CETP participants would provide a core for the meeting, assuring it of a critical mass. Also, I suspect that some CETP folks would not want to attend a CETP meeting in March or April and another conference on similar issues just a few months later. Holding it in Washington in the spring offers an attractive venue, and the possibility of some logistical support from the NSF staff is another feature that would not be available in a convention center elsewhere.

I am looking forward to getting your feedback.

Thanks for the feedback; I'm glad you like the idea. Hopefully we will also get some input from the other collaboratives. Your comment is the only one after four weeks. I don't think the silence implies lack of enthusiasm for the international conference, but it would be nice to hear from some other folks.

International/CETP Conference 2002 (Score:1)

The International Conference proposed by Morton is a great idea which I fully support.
I think I can say the same for other colleagues here at ACEPT (Arizona).

Dissemination is becoming an ever higher priority with ACEPT, particularly
with our fifth year coming to a close in a few days!

We are currently focusing on the usual venues for dissemination (Tech
Reports, Journal publications, Conference presentations, videos, website,
monographs, books, etc.) and we will continue to do so over the few years.
However, the International Conference you propose, coming in two years time,
will provide a special occasion for bringing results together in
particularly powerful and coherent ways (rather than scattered all over the
mediated world). The concurrent opportunities to discuss and reflect while
at the conference should also be highly generative. Perhaps new priorities
can be identified and promoted.

Not knowing any of the detail of the conference, I would still say that
ACEPT anticipates participating fully in the conference. It is in alignment
with our priorities

ECEPT appears to be a good place to keep this conversation going.
