Recruitment, Induction and Mentoring New Teacher Support Network

Dan Walker
San Jose State University (MASTEP)

MASTEP (Mathematics and Science Teacher Education Program), the San Francisco Bay Area CETP, initiated a New Teacher Support Network in the first year of the project. We have two primary objectives: 1) the successful induction of new teachers into the classroom with a minimum of attrition from teaching careers, and 2) development of the next generation of teacher leaders who will help direct their schools and districts in on-going educational reform. Network activities will be discussed, including mentor-mentee relationships, residential workshops, and a customized Masters Degree Program. In support of the success of this Network, we will present retention data for the teachers produced by MASTEP over the last about five years.
