Future Educator's Summer Academy (FESA)
Randy Hunt and Gayle Anderson
Langston University Sch. of Education and Behavioral Sciences
In 1998 FESA was established as a three-year response to urban and rural underserved and underrepresented students who have an interest in becoming elementary and secondary teachers. A total of (40) (9-12) grade student will spend two weeks in the month of July at Langston University. In the application process students are to have transcripts, two teacher recommendation letters, and an essay on "What does it take to become a Teacher?". The curriculum is based upon reading, writing, mathematics, and technology education. Students will participate in classroom presentations; develop web pages, portfolios, and journals, and test-taking skills. Prior to the academy's beginning, six in-service and six pre-service educators who have been admitted to teacher education will be trained during the academic school year to participate in the summer program to develop hands on inquiry based classroom activities. The pre-service students will be teaching in the classroom with other certified faculty members.
The goal of Langston University School of Education and Behavioral Sciences in collaboration with Oklahoma Teacher Education Collaborative (OTEC), NASA-Johnson Spaceflight Center Aerospace Education Services Program, and the Prairie View A/M and Texas Southern University (two historically black universities) in Texas are to produce effective, informed, and reflective future teachers capable of independent practice and professional growth. Our long-term expectations are quality and technically skilled educators committed to serving a diverse student population placed throughout the State of Oklahoma and the world. Outcomes are to: 1. gain knowledge of standards in mathematics, science, reading, writing, technology, and Oklahoma Priority Academic Student Skills; 2. develop a Portfolio, FESA website, Lesson Plan Power Points, and Reflective Journals. The FESA will help assure these outcomes are met by providing opportunities for hands-on inquiry all areas. Evaluation includes pre and post test in the subject areas. Also all participants will develop a Portfolio, a FESA website project, Lesson Plan Power Point presentation, and Reflective Journal by the end of the academy. Pre-service students will use this experience as part of their portfolio assessment. Follow up activities include participants to participate in Education Week activities at Langston.
